2017 St. Edith Fall Football Information
Registration for the Fall 2017 Season is Now Open
All athletes in 3rd through 8th grades (2017-2018 school years) whose parents/guardians are members of one of the following parishes are eligible to play football for St. Edith:
Holy Family (Novi)
Program Philosophy We will coach football fundamentals and teach techniques in a progressive manner that will help each player learn the game while becoming well prepared to compete at the next level if they desire to do so. We will be positive, honest, and fair. We will instill confidence and improve self-esteem in our players while administering the discipline necessary to build character and success. Most importantly, we will have fun and make sure the kids have fun while learning to play the game we all love. Teams win and teams lose, but we will do our best to make sure your son knows we care about him. We will take every opportunity as coaches to leave a lasting and positive impression that goes beyond the season and extends throughout each player’s life. Our coaches will be made up of many former high school and collegiate players who buy into this philosophy and are coaching for their love of the game and their love of the program.
2017 PARENT INFORMATION
The following is an overview of key information for the upcoming season. We will have a fall sports parents meeting in early August.
Teams: We typically field teams at 3 separate levels Freshman (3rd and 4th graders); JV (5th and 6th graders), and Varsity (7th and 8th graders). The number of teams each year will depend on the number of athletes that sign up.
Playing Time: 3rd/4th grades will have relatively equal playing time; JV is competitive but all players will play a meaningful number of plays; Varsity is highly competitive and committed players will receive the most playing time. Each team will have a coach dedicated to monitoring playing time. Players that frequently miss practice will see reduced playing time at the discretion of the head coach.
Our motto continues to be: 1.God 2.Family 3. School 4. Football
Varsity: Dustin Hess
Varsity - 170 lbs
JV - 140 lbs
Freshman - 125 lbs
Equipment: We pride ourselves on the ability to provide top notch equipment for our players at all levels. We have recently had our equipment inspected by the manufacturer and refurbished as needed. Due to increased safety regulations, we have made the decision to replace those helmets that did not meet the minimum standards. It is important for all players to attend our equipment hand out in early August so that they can get personally fitted to ensure a safe and comfortable fit.
Practice and Games: Practices are held at Riley Upper Elementary School. We typically practice for an hour and a half, Tuesday thru Friday with games on Saturdays. Our home games are held at Catholic Central High School, Livonia Stevenson High School, or Churchill High School. Parents are welcome to attend practice but must stay off the practice fields. Voluntary Workouts: Conditioning, Speed and Agility drills for 5th - 8th grade during July.
Physicals: Mandatory and must be dated after April 15, 2016. Player cannot participate or receive equipment until physical is turned in.
Forms: Physical form, Concussion Form, CYO Football Contract/Assumption of Risk are due by first practice date.
Parent Volunteer Assignments: The success of our program is dependent on our volunteers. Many parents choose to volunteer as board members, coordinators and coaches, but we also need assistance with fundraisers, equipment hand out and mostly on game days. Some of the volunteer positions are Concessions, Gate, 50/50, Chain Gang, Announcers, Spotters etc. Home game assignments will be posted 1-2 weeks prior to the event. It is the responsibility of the parent to find a suitable replacement if they are unable to make their scheduled shift.
Fundraiser: The sale of Little Caesars Pizza Kits will continue to be our major fundraiser. Those families that choose not to sell the kits can opt to make a $25 donation to the program.
Spirit Wear- We will offer a web based sale in late July/Early August with a wide variety of items including hats, sweatshirts, sweatpants, t-shirts, jackets etc.
Key Dates: Will be updated once 2017 schedule is released by the CYO. As a rule, football related events such as the parent meeting, conditioning, and equipment handout will start the first week in August. State regulations mandate that all players must complete 3 days of conditioning in helmets and shorts prior to full contact in pads. Those players that miss the mandatory conditioning in helmets will have to make up the conditioning on the sidelines while the rest of the players are in full pads.
Communications: Email is primary communication. Always include athlete's name and team. The website will be updated to identify the email and phone numbers for all coaches. Please remember to respect the 24 hour rule before contacting your coach regarding playing time issue etc. WE NEVER WANT TO FORGET THAT THIS PROGRAM IS ABOUT THE KIDS. If you do need to contact your child's coach, please wait until after practice, unless there is something that he needs to be aware of prior to the end of practice.
The Chain of Command is as follows:
1. Player/Parent communicates with Coach.
2. If not resolved, they should then go to the Football Coordinator.
3. If not resolved, they should communicate with Varsity Head Coach and/or Football Coordinator (if needed).
4. If still unresolved, they should contact the Athletic Director.
5. Athletic Director will communicate with Pastor if necessary.
COMPLIANCE WITH CYO RULES
St. Edith Athletics are played under the administration of the Catholic Youth Organization. All coaches, parents and children must abide by the CYO rules. They can be found at www.cyodetroit.org.
